Family: Anthomyiidae (Root-maggot Flies) » Species: Anthomyia procellaris (Rondani, 1866)
Identification: Length 5 to 7mm. There are similar species of fly in this genus. A fairly attractive and distinctive black and light grey patterned species, particularly on the thorax.
Flight Period: Spring to autumn.
Diet: The adults feed on pollen, and the larvae feed on bird droppings.
Habitat: Wooded areas.
Distribution & Status: Throughout England and Wales.
